About our cause
The Disabled Policy & Advocacy Network (DPAN) is a new Disabled People's Organisation founded in 2026. We are founded and led by Disabled People.
A bit about why we exist:
Britain's first Disability Discrimination Act in 1995 came after decades of activism: direct action, mass organising, and a disabled people's movement that refused to accept exclusion as inevitable, part of a wider international rights movement that included the influence of the US civil rights struggle.
Since 2010, that protection has been folded into the Equality Act — broader on paper, but vaguer in practice, leaving disabled people's rights open to interpretation and harder to enforce. At the same time, the support systems that let us function — Access to Work, PIP, Motability — have faced repeated cuts, while sections of the media have painted disabled people as liars, as lazy, as ‘woke snowflakes’. The result is a climate of growing hostility, and a movement that feels like it's being pushed backwards rather than forwards.
There are Disabled People's Organisations fighting this at a national, structural level. There are charities providing practical, face-to-face support on the ground. But very little exists in between. The Disabled Policy & Advocacy Network (DPAN) exists to fill that space.
What we do:
We have 3 core aims:
- To create an accessible and inclusive ‘one stop shop’ resource and toolkit bank for disabled people and their carers to find information, understand how to apply the information, have the practical self-implementation tools to do so, and easily be able to seek relevant and appropriate support from 3rd parties when needed.
- To connect disabled people of all ages and backgrounds to the culture and history of the disabled people’s movement, through various creative and educational mediums.
- To help organisation’s disability relevant policies align with their practice, through implementation consultancy and service provision which simplify and aid implementation.
Our values are... Collaboration, Fairness, Accessibility, Innovation and Evidence-led.
As a new organisation we need your support, your donations will fund our first years overheads, allowing us to focus on grant and sponsorship applications for us to fulfill our aims through various projects.
