About our cause
Deaf Community Independence CIC (DCI) provides specialist support for Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users, enabling them to live fulfilling, independent lives while reducing isolation, stress and the barriers they face every day.
We provide a bespoke, person-centred service that recognises the diverse needs of Deaf people. Our staff are fluent in BSL, allowing Deaf people to communicate directly without the barriers often experienced when accessing mainstream services.
Support is provided through face-to-face visits and video calls, empowering Deaf people to make informed choices, maintain their independence and achieve their personal goals.
Our support includes helping people to:
• Access healthcare services and understand medical information.
• Manage everyday tasks needed to maintain their home, tenancy or finances.
• Understand correspondence from hospitals, local authorities and government departments.
• Participate in their local Deaf community.
• Challenge discrimination and inequality within public services.
• Understand their rights and make formal complaints when services fail to provide equal access.
• Live healthy, independent and fulfilling lives.
What Your Lottery Ticket Helps Fund
Many Deaf BSL users live in a predominantly hearing world that remains inaccessible despite legal duties placed on public services. Too often, statutory agencies fail to provide qualified BSL interpreters, accessible information or effective communication support. This leaves Deaf people excluded from decisions about their own lives and unable to access services on an equal basis with hearing people.
Deaf people continue to face significant barriers when accessing healthcare, social care, housing and other public services. Communication barriers can lead to poorer health outcomes, increased stress, social isolation and reduced wellbeing. Research has consistently shown that Deaf people experience poorer health outcomes than the general population, often due to inaccessible communication and difficulties accessing appropriate support.
Deaf people also face significant barriers when trying to access mental health support. Many services rely on telephone referrals, assessments and appointments, creating an immediate barrier for Deaf BSL users. Delays in accessing appropriate communication support can leave Deaf people struggling to obtain help during periods of emotional distress or mental health crisis.
Accessing police services can be equally challenging. Although Deaf people can contact emergency services through BSL 999, communication barriers often continue when officers arrive. In many cases, no qualified BSL interpreter is provided, leaving Deaf people unable to fully explain what has happened or understand information being given to them. Because BSL is a language in its own right, with different grammar and structure to English, written communication is not always an effective alternative. Deaf people are often left uncertain about outcomes, next steps or available support, and follow-up communication may not be accessible.
These barriers affect every aspect of life, from healthcare and mental health services to housing, benefits, policing and the justice system.
Funding raised through the Giving Lottery will help DCI advocate for Deaf people, challenge discrimination and hold public services accountable for providing equal access. It will fund advocacy, practical support and community outreach, helping Deaf people access the communication support they are legally entitled to receive.
Lottery funding will also help us organise accessible social, educational and cultural activities that reduce isolation, build confidence and strengthen connections within the Deaf community.
By playing the Giving Lottery, you are helping Deaf people secure equal access, better health outcomes and greater independence while creating lasting change for future generations of Deaf people.
Together, we can challenge inequality, break down communication barriers and ensure Deaf people are heard, included and respected.
